V-ONE and Metrocall Support Law Enforcement At Olympics
March 2, 2002 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- V-ONE Corporation (v-one.com), a leading Internet security technology company, and Metrocall (metrocall.com), one of the largest wireless data and messaging companies in the United States, disclosed on Thursday that they had taken part in assisting federal law enforcement personnel at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games.
During the security planning process for the games, say the companies, law enforcement officials had to address the need for secure communications between headquarters and field officials during the event. The games covered a wide geographical area and required some officials to work outdoors in rugged terrain and sports venues throughout Salt Lake City and Park City.
Officials chose to communicate through secure two-way pagers, supplied by V-ONE and Metrocall, and made it a point that networks not be overloaded or otherwise compromised, a concern after the failure of cell phone communication during the September 11th terrorist attacks.
During the games, the agents’ network traffic was carried on 800 two-way pagers specifically programmed for use by law enforcement. The security of the communications over the Metrocall network and the pagers was successfully ensured by V-ONE’s Air SmartGate technology, which kept all sensitive and confidential transmissions private.
Additionally, says V-ONE, urgent messages were broadcast instantly and simultaneously to large groups using V-ONE’s Web-based paging terminal. Air SmartGate is used to extend V-ONE’s SmartGate technology to wireless pagers, using 128-bit encryption and two-factor authentication.
``V-ONE was pleased to partner with Metrocall to provide quality managed VPN service to the Federal Government and other law enforcement officials during the highly visible and security conscious Olympic Games,'' says Margaret Grayson, V-ONE president and CEO.
The U.S. Secret Service, FBI and Federal Emergency Management Agency all took part in planning the counter-terrorist security for the games. Following the procedures outlined in Presidential Directive 62, established by the President of the United States after the Atlanta games, the Secret Service takes the lead in planning, the FBI in intelligence and response and FEMA in consequence management. State and local law enforcement also take part in the overall execution of the plan.
