Symantec Launches Integrated Gateway Security Appliance
February 19, 2002 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- On Tuesday, Symantec Corp. (symantec.com), a world leader in Internet security, introduced Symantec Gateway Security, an integrated gateway security appliance that incorporates five security functions into a single solution designed to prevent security breaches at the network perimeter. The device is making its debut at the RSA 2002 conference being held February 18-22 in San Jose, California.
Symantec Gateway Security combines firewall, gateway-level anti-virus, intrusion detection, content filtering and VPN capabilities in a single appliance designed to protect small and medium enterprises as well as the branch offices of large corporations against blended Internet attacks.
The product, says Symantec, presents a ready-to-deploy complete network security solution designed to protect against malicious threats of any kind, including blended threats such as Code Red and Nimda. It is also flexible enough to fit easily into the overall architecture of existing networks and security plans.
Included among the products key features is an IPSec compliant VPN component based on Symantec Enterprise VPN 7.0. The VPN function includes an integrated proxy secured VPN technology that allows administrators to monitor traffic at the application level, not just the network level, which helps prevent the VPN from becoming a backdoor security hole.
The product’s other features include firewall security, anti-virus technology, Internet content filtering, Intrusion detection and automated updating.
"Small and medium enterprises and branch offices of large corporations are exposed to the same blended threats and hack attacks facing Fortune 500 organizations and often do not have the dedicated technical resources to manage a comprehensive network security system," says Gail Hamilton, executive vice president, Symantec Corp. "With its all-in-one functionality and ability to be managed remotely, the Symantec Gateway Security appliance offers customers superior, cost-effective network protection from a single security expert."
Symantec Gateway Security’s integrated functions are managed from a graphical management console included in the appliance. Using the console, administrators can manage local and remote appliances via the Internet.
According to Symantec, the appliance helps customers eliminate the need to deploy and manage multiple security products manufactured by a number of different vendors.
