I-Link Awarded VoIP-Related Patent

August 23, 2002 -- Enhanced voice and data communications company I-Link Incorporated (I-Link.com) announced on Wednesday that the US Patent and Trademark Office has issued I-Link a patent for its Voice Internet Transmission System.

Filed in 1996, I-Link says its patent shows the company’s role in the development of Voice over Internet Protocol technology.

"The concepts detailed in the Voice Internet Transmission patent represent early VoIP thinking, but it is these concepts that form the base for evolving VoIP telephony capabilities we see in various forms today," said Alex Radulovic, I-Link's chief technology officer and patent co-author.

I-Link says it has been at the forefront of VoIP development since its inception in 1994. The Voice Internet Transmission System Patent adds to the company’s first two IP patents filed in 1996, which are related to the delivery of high-quality conference calls with compressed signals.

The company says it has deployed the patented technologies in I-Link’s nationwide IP network and unified messaging service, application programming interface and software licensing businesses.

The Voice Internet Transmission System patent, says I-Link covers the transmission of phone-to-phone communication via the Internet. The solution uses a system of Internet access nodes to create a digitized signal to deliver high-quality calling using the Internet as a transport medium and reducing cost.

"This patent is wonderful validation of I-Link's VoIP technology, and a tangible confirmation of I-Link's VoIP expertise," says I-Link president and CEO, Helen Seltzer. "We are pleased to have provided technical solutions over the years that have produced value for our customers, and opportunities for other firms to grow. With this patent, we have been recognized as a referential component of the very integral components of VoIP. As such, it reinforces the foundational role I-Link technology has played in the evolving VoIP market."
