China Telecom to Deploy Nortel VoIP Solution

March 25, 2002 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Networking equipment manufacturer Nortel Networks announced on Friday that China Telecommunications Corporation, operator of The People’s Republic of China’s largest terrestrial communications network, has signed a contract with Nortel for the deployment of a voice over Internet protocol solution in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

China Telecom, says Nortel, will use the solution to conduct a commercial trial of traditional telephone services and new, IP-based multimedia services over the more cost-effective packet infrastructure. Nortel says it will use elements of its Succession VoIP solutions portfolio, including softwsitches, to enable China Telecom to employ a converged network for packet trunking, packetized broadband and narrow band access, as well as for multimedia services delivery.

"The trial networks will position China Telecom to offer a much greater variety of high-quality voice, data and multimedia services than ever before," says Robert Mao, president and chief executive officer, Nortel Networks China. "Nortel Networks is committed to working with China Telecom and other Chinese carriers to transform their existing, separate networks into single, cost-effective converged infrastructures."

The Nortel network solution for the trial deployment will include the Nortel Networks Succession Communication Server 2000-Compact, Succession Communication Server 3000 and Interactive Multimedia Server softswitches, Passport Packet Voice Gateway, integrated access devices and session initiation protocol client.

According to Nortel, China Telecom will also use the company’s Interactive Multimedia Server to deliver new IP-based services like instant video conferencing. The software-based application server, says Nortel, can be deployed in existing terrestrial and wireless networks, or in next-generation packet networks. The service will allow consumers and business users to create portable personal communications profiles, flexible enough to be reached virtually anywhere, on any device and over any network.

A leader in next generation network solutions, says the company, Nortel Networks has announced contracts from such major international carriers as BT Spain, Germany’s ish, and Sprint Communications and Qwest Communications in the United States.
