3Com Supports Health Communications VoIP Network

April 12, 2002 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Network equipment manufacturer 3Com Corporation (3com.com) announced on Monday that Health Communications Inc., a marketing communications firm specializing in the health care industry, has deployed an enterprise-wide voice and data network powered by 3Com switches, wireless access points and IP-based business telephone solutions.

After considering products from Cisco, intertel, Altigen and Mitel, says 3Com, the firm chose to implement a solution incorporating 3Com’s SuperStack 3 Switch 4900 and SuperStack 3 Switch 3300.

3Com says Health Communications chose the company’s NBX networked telephony system for features such as voice mail, automated attendants, unified messaging and computer telephony integration. The system, says 3Com, provides all the performance and delivers all the features of a traditional PBX telephony system. The company is also using 3Com’s Access Point 6000 and Wireless LAN PC cards to support its wireless network.

"We wanted an easy to use, one-stop solution for both voice and data that would be capable of meeting the high bandwidth needs of our creative services department," says Keith Mattila, IT director, Health Communications. "While the other products we looked at were complex and expensive, 3Com's plug-and-play solution offered superior features at an affordable price."

With the assistance of Memphis-based Network Cabling Technologies (NTC), says 3Com, Health Communications installed 3Com SuperStack 3 Switch 3300s, a single SuperStack 3 4900 12-port Gigabit switch, wireless LAN Access Point 6000s and Wireless LAN PC Cards. Health Communications also deployed a SuperStack 3 NBX chassis and phone sets to deliver its voice services.

The feature set of the NBX system, says 3Com allows the firm’s employees to communicate more effectively with clients and colleagues. And by connecting the two offices through a secure VPN, the company can take advantage of toll-free VoIP long distance.
