Guangdong Mobile Picks Ericsson For IP VPN in China

June 20, 2002 -- Telecommunications company Ericsson (Ericsson.com) and network solution developer Juniper Networks (Juniper.net) announced on Tuesday that they have entered into a project with China Mobile Communications subsidiary Guangdong Mobile Communications to deploy a commercial multiprotocol label switching-based virtual private network in China.

Under the contract with Guangdong Mobile Communications (GMCC), Ericsson says it will provide its Packet Backbone Network Solution, deploying its AXI 520 series IP Backbone Routers, based on Juniper M20 and M10 Internet routers, in nine cities in the Guangdong province.

Ericsson says it will build the MPLS-based VPN onto GMCC’s existing provincial backbone network, allowing the company to offer its customers secure VPN services to its customers following the project’s completion.

"This second project with GMCC further strengthens our two companies' relationship following the construction of GMCC's provincial backbone network last year," says Jan Malm, president of Ericsson China. "Further, it demonstrates Ericsson's ability and competence in delivering comprehensive, high-end IP datacom solutions to operators."

The AXI 520 and 580 IP backbone routers, says Ericsson, are built to deliver reliable, scalable and cost-efficient IP services across high-speed networks. Based on ASIC technology and Juniper Networks’ JUNOS Internet Software, the routers simplify rollout and support, accelerating the time it takes to design, test and deploy the network and provision new services.
